Aug 7 - Michigan!
Michigan has a TON of exciting races this year, and since it will probably be Ground Zero in the 2020 Presidential race, it's good to get geared up now!
First up, governor! The horrible Flint-ruining Rick Snyder is out, term-limited. It's time we get someone in there who will help financially troubled communities and not kick them when they're down. 4 Dems are running. Emily's List has endorsed Former State Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer. However, I am also intrigued by the candidacy of Former Health Director Abdul El-Sayed. I think either of these fine people winning would be excellent!
For Senate, Debbie Stabenow is up for re-election and has no primary opponent. This is a really important seat to hold in the fall, so she will need you then!
House races! MI is lousy with pick-up opportunities!
MI 1 and 2 have no active primary, we'll catch up with them in the fall
MI3 (Grand Rapids and Battle Creek): Its not really on the radar as a pickup opportunity but its only R+6. Cathy Albro is running on election reform which I am a huge fan of. Fred Wooden is running on a progressive platform. Both are newcomers to politics, and both seem great, certainly better than Republican Justin Amash!
MI4 (Saginaw): Another long shot, but you never know! Both candidates are pretty unpolished though, so hard to pick.
MI6 (Kalamazoo): This is a top target, so 4 Dems are running! (All white men though) David Benac is a Sanders activist, Matt Longjohn is a doctor running on health reform, the other 2 are running on pro-business platforms.
MI7 (Lansing and SE): Gretchen Driksell is the Emily's List endorsed candidate.
MI8 (East Lansing and Rochester): Elissa Slotkin is the Emily's List endorsed candidate.
MI9 (Detroit suburbs): this is a Dem-help OPEN SEAT. The district is Dem leaning, but it's still important to put up a solid candidate. Ellen Lipton is the Emily's List endorsed candidate.
MI10 (The Thumb): The most conservative district in the state, but there is still a spirited primary! Frank Accavetti is going for labor, Kimberly Bizon is a young newcomer, and Mike McCarthy can't be bothered to make a website.
MI11 (Detroit suburbs): An open Repbulican-held seat, this is definitely a top target. 5 Dems are running. Tim Greimel is a former House Minority Leader, Fayroud Saaz and Haley Stevens have worked for government in non-elected capacities, and Suneel Gupta is a business exec with a progressive platform. Hard to pick, they are all good options.
MI13 (Detroit): An open, totally safe Dem seat, THIS IS THE GENERAL! 7 Dems are running, its impossible to pick. However, I would put my vote for one of the women of color since this is a majority minority district and the last Rep left over sexual harassment allegations! (Just a note, there are 2 elections in this district for the same seat, one for the rest of the term, Nov to Jan, and one for the regular term. No reason to split, let the new Rep get a jump on seniority!)
State Senate: ALL 38 seats are up! Dems need 2 seats to stop a veto-proof majority if they take back the governor's mansion, and of course, it would be nice for the Senate to better reflect the actual mix of the state. These elections determine who is in charge of redistricting.
SD1 (Detroit): an open safe Dem seat, THIS IS THE GENERAL. 6 Dems are running.
SD2 (Detroit and Gross Pointe): another open safe Dem seat, THIS IS THE GENERAL. 11, yes 11, Dems are running!
SD3 (Detroit and Dearborn): another open safe Dem seat, THIS IS THE GENERAL. Sylvia Santana is the Emily's List endorsed candidate.
SD4 (Detroit): another open safe Dem seat, THIS IS THE GENERAL. 3 Dems running.
SD6 (Det suburbs, Taylor): another open safe Dem seat, THIS IS THE GENERAL. Erika Geiss is the Emily's List endorsed candidate.
SD7 (Det suburbs, Livonia): Dayna Polehanki is the Emily's List endorsed candidate to flip this seat!
SD8 (Det suburbs, St Claire Shores): 3 Dems running to flip this open seat.
SD9 (Det suburbs, Clinton): 2 Dems running to hold this open seat.
SD11 (Det suburbs, Royal Oak): 4 Dems running hold this open seat.
SD14 (Det suburbs, Fenton): 3 Dems running to flip this open seat.
SD18 (Ann Arbor): 4 Dems running to hold this open seat.
SD28 (Grand Rapids area): 3 Dems running to flip this open seat.
SD31 (Bay City): 4 Dems running to flip this open seat.
SD32 (Saginaw): 2 Dems running to challenge the incumbent
SD33 (Central MI, Mount Pleasant): 2 Dems running to challenge the incumbent
SD34 (Muskegon): 2 Dems running to challenge the incumbent
State House! ALL 110 seats are up!
There are way too many active primaries to run them all down here, but there are tons, so definitely check out your district!
