June 26th - Maryland!

On to our next race this Tuesday, Maryland! A very blue state with a Republican governor.

So Governor Hogan is up for re-election but he is extremely popular. And well, ok MD, that's cool. Honestly, governor is probably the ONLY race in which I would ever consider voting for a Republican, because it doesn't affect control of Congress or the state legislature or the national agenda. It is possible to have moderate, competent, good Republicans at the state level and if that Republican pledges to work with the Democratically controlled legislature, then that's fine. So MD, if you love Gov Hogan, I get it. But, he should still face some decent opposition to keep him honest and give voters a real choice, and hoo boy, there are 8 teams of Dems running! The two big names are Ben Jealous, a former NAACP president, and Rushern Baker, the Prince Georges County Executive (both are POC). Either will have an uphill battle, but check them both out!

Democratic Senator Ben Cardin is also running for re-election and has drawn some primary challenges, most notably Chelsea Manning. With this being a blue state, whoever wins this primary shouldn't have trouble in November, but Cardin has been a reliable liberal vote and seems to be doing just fine for MD, so I don't see a real reason to oust him.

In the House, MD is quite gerrymandered so there is not a lot of drama here, there is 1 reliably Republican district and the rest are reliably Dem. This is something the people of MD should be addressing with their legislature, but anyway - the only district with anything happening is D6 because there is an open Dem seat so THIS IS THE GENERAL! 8 Dems are running, Emily's List has endorsed Aruna Miller.

The entire MD Senate is up for re-election! The Dems have a large veto-proof majority and with a Republican governor, its good to keep it that way :) There are a number of active primaries, notably for several open seats where THIS IS THE GENERAL:

SD12 (Baltimore): a safe Dem open seat, Emily's List has endorsed Mary Katy Sigaty.

SD18 (Montgomery Co. DC suburbs, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville etc): Emily's List has endorsed Dana Beyer.

SD25 (Prince George DC suburbs, Andrew AFB, Westphalia etc): 3 Dems running, 2 ladies!

SD26 (Prince George DC suburbs, Fort Washington etc): 2 Dems running

SD30 (Annapolis): 2 ladies running here

SD41 (Baltimore): 2 Dems running here

SD42 (Towson and areas north): 2 Dems running

SD47 (Prince George DC suburbs Hyattsville): 2 Dems running

There are also plenty of primaries to flip seats or against incumbents. Full List

In the state House of Delegates, same as the Senate, Dems are trying to hang on to the veto-proof majority. Also MD is a bit unusual, in that they have some multi-member districts.

Baltimore is also having municipal elections for States Attorney and Sheriff. The incumbent State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby already has a strong record on criminal reform and police brutality. In the Sheriff's race, incumbent John Anderson is facing a strong challenge from Stanley Bradford, a senior police official. Front and center is police brutality and the murder of Freddie Gray. What's more important is making an informed choice and being involved in the local elections that really affect your life in a direct day to day way, so anyone in Baltimore please get to the polls!!
