June 30th - The Texas 27th!
So there aren't a lot of big races in July, so we will have a few quick hits each week now!
This Saturday is the special election for the 27th Congressional District in Texas. The incumbent Blake Farenthold is resigning after using public funds to pay a sexual harassment suit. Sigh. BUT this district was Dem held for years until the 2010 massacre, so there is certainly reason to hope we can take it back!
The 27th includes Corpus Cristi, along the coast towards Houston, and a strip heading up towards Austin. It's about 50% Hispanic.
Now this is a jungle primary, CA-style, where the top 2 vote-getters regardless of party will go on to a runoff unless someone gets 50%. The runoff would be in September. Also, bizarrely, the regular primary for the regular term has already happened, and Eric Holguin won on the Dem side. So he is already going to be up for the full spot in November. The governor called the special election anyway so there would be someone in the seat for the 3-6 months. Most of the other candidates on the ballot have stopped campaigning, so we need to make sure we go all out here for Eric Holguin and give him the edge heading into November! In what will probably be a low turnout election, just a bit of enthusiasm on our side could give us the edge, and imagine what a great boost that would be going into the fall!
